QuietCheck listens for the signals that smart glasses, Bluetooth trackers and drones broadcast to anyone in range, and gives you a read on what is around you with a stated confidence for each finding.

Every method it uses is heuristic and approximate. It can miss real devices and it can flag things that turn out to be harmless. No alert is not a guarantee of safety.

What it detects

Four things, each by a named mechanism.

Every detection is proximity‑only by design. QuietCheck can notice what is physically near the phone it is running on, right now. It has no way to look up, locate or monitor a specific device or person anywhere else.

Smart glasses

Camera glasses that are broadcasting.

Matches the Bluetooth advertising signal against manufacturer identifiers known to belong to smart‑glasses hardware — Meta Ray‑Ban, Snap Spectacles and others.

The limit A manufacturer identifier is shared across a company’s whole product line, so a match is a strong clue rather than proof of a specific device.

Bluetooth trackers

Tile, Chipolo and similar tags in range.

Detects trackers by the manufacturer identifiers they broadcast continuously, the same publicly visible signal any Bluetooth scanner can see.

The limit A tracker that is powered down, out of range, or broadcasting under an identifier we don’t yet recognize is invisible to it. If Bluetooth trackers are your specific concern, AirGuard from TU Darmstadt is free, open‑source and good at exactly this.

Drones

Aircraft sending the Remote ID broadcast.

Parses the standardized ASTM F3411 Remote ID broadcast that most drones now transmit over Bluetooth — a real aviation‑safety standard, not an inference.

The limit A drone that is not transmitting Remote ID does not appear. Nothing about a silent aircraft reaches your phone.

Hidden cameras

Optional check

A lens‑glint scan, run only when you start it.

With the flashlight on in a dim room, a camera lens reflects light back as a small, sharp, unusually bright point. QuietCheck looks for that pattern in live camera frames, on‑device, frame by frame in memory. Nothing is recorded, saved or transmitted.

The limit This is a heuristic aid, not a guarantee, and it is the weakest thing in the app. It will miss real cameras plenty of the time — wrong angle, no reflection at that moment, ambient light too bright, a lens too small or recessed — and it will flag jewelry and glass. Do not rely on it as your only way to check a room.

How sure we are

Every match carries a tier, never a flat yes.

QuietCheck tells you something is probably nearby. It never tells you something is definitely there.

High

A manufacturer ID verified against an authoritative registry, from a company whose only real product line matches the category — or a validly formatted Remote ID broadcast.

Medium

A real, verified manufacturer ID, but from a company whose product line is broader than this one category, so the match is a weaker signal.

Low / Unverified

A plausible but unconfirmed signal. Shown so you are not left with no information at all, and labeled clearly as needing more confirmation.

The scope statement

What QuietCheck cannot detect

The most useful page we can give you. Some of these are features we built and then removed.

A microphone that is recording

A phone cannot detect an active microphone. There is no signal to read. We cut the feature rather than ship the theater.

A specific individual device

A device can share a manufacturer identifier with matching hardware without being that hardware. We report the category and our confidence, never an identity.

A real bearing or exact distance

Distance comes from a path‑loss model on signal strength — noisy by nature, thrown off by reflection, orientation, obstructions and power differences. The angle on the radar view is illustrative, not a compass bearing. Bluetooth does not support direction‑finding.

Anything not broadcasting Bluetooth

A wired camera, a cellular GPS logger, a device that is powered off, or hardware broadcasting under an identifier we do not yet recognize. No signal, no finding.

A cell‑site simulator

iOS gives no app access to the baseband radio. Nothing on the App Store can do this honestly, ours included.

Reliably, while backgrounded

Background Bluetooth scanning is best‑effort on iOS. The platform does not reliably deliver new device discoveries once an app is suspended, for the kind of broad scan this requires.

No alert is not a guarantee of safety.

A quiet sweep means nothing answered. It does not mean nothing is there.

Why does QuietCheck need Bluetooth access?

Bluetooth is how it listens for the publicly broadcast advertising signals that smart glasses, trackers and drones send out — the same signal any Bluetooth scanner can see. QuietCheck never connects to, pairs with, or controls any device it detects. It only listens.

Why does it need camera access?

Only for the optional Hidden Camera Check, which analyzes live camera frames on‑device to look for a lens‑glint pattern. It runs only while that screen is open and scanning is active — never automatically, never in the background. No image or video is recorded, saved or transmitted.

Why does it need location access?

It doesn’t, unless you ask for it. Location is optional and off by default. Turning on “Tag detections with location” records an approximate location alongside future detections so you can review them on a map. That data stays on your device. A separate toggle, also off by default, lets you contribute an anonymous +1 to a shared community sighting‑density map.

Why does it need calendar access?

Only if you turn on Meeting mode, which is off by default. It checks your calendar on‑device for a current or upcoming meeting so QuietCheck can offer to start a scan. Your calendar is read on‑device only and is never sent anywhere.

Is my data private?

Almost everything QuietCheck does happens entirely on your iPhone with no network access at all. No analytics SDK, no ad SDK, no tracking of any kind. A handful of optional features do talk to a server — signature‑database sync, anonymous feedback, and the opt‑in community map — and the privacy policy spells out exactly what each one sends.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Scanning, matching, notifying and history all work fully offline. The app tries once on launch to sync its signature database and falls back silently to the bundled offline copy if that is unreachable.

Can QuietCheck be used to track or identify another person?

No. Every detection mechanism is proximity‑only by design. It can detect what is physically near the phone running it, right now, and has no way to look up, locate or monitor a specific device or person anywhere else.

Why didn’t a notification fire while my phone was locked?

Background Bluetooth scanning is best‑effort on iOS. The platform doesn’t reliably deliver newly appearing device discoveries once an app is suspended, for the kind of broad scan QuietCheck has to run. A missing alert while backgrounded doesn’t mean nothing was nearby.
