How to tell if someone’s smart glasses are recording.
Usually you can, and the answer is the light. Every major camera‑equipped pair sold today has an indicator LED that comes on while it captures, and on Ray‑Ban Meta glasses that light is now enforced in firmware — cover it during a recording and the camera shuts off.
The honest catch is that a light only helps a person who is looking at it. It tells you nothing when the wearer is behind you, across a room, at an angle, or standing in bright sun. There is no method, ours included, that reliably tells a bystander that a recording is in progress.
If you read nothing else.
- Look for the light near the camera. A brief flash means a photo. A steady or pulsing light means video.
- On Ray‑Ban Meta glasses the light can no longer be defeated by covering it. As of an update Meta announced on 28 August 2026, covering or tampering with the capture LED stops the camera — including mid‑recording, which was the remaining loophole.
- That fix does not travel. It applies to Meta’s glasses. Other manufacturers make their own choices, and some camera‑equipped frames have far weaker indication.
- A radio scan is a different question. It can tell you glasses are near you. It cannot tell you they are recording — the recording state is not broadcast.
- Nothing here is proof. These are clues. Treat them as a reason to ask, not as a verdict.
01 — The indicator
The light, and what changed in August 2026.
The capture LED is the only mechanism in this whole subject that was actually designed to tell a bystander something. It is worth knowing precisely how far it goes.
What it looks like
On Ray‑Ban Meta glasses the camera sits in the upper corner of the frame — upper left from the wearer’s point of view — with a small indicator beside it. A brief flash accompanies a still photo. Video is signalled by a light that stays on or pulses for the duration.Designed for you
The loophole, and its closing
Meta had already blocked a recording from starting while the LED was obstructed. People worked around it by starting the recording first and covering the light afterwards. On 28 August 2026 Meta said an update would disable the camera when the capture LED is covered, tampered with or destroyed — including during an active recording. That closes the gap that mattered.Real improvement
Why it still is not enough
The indicator is small and dim by design, and in direct sunlight or bright indoor light it is genuinely hard to see. It faces forward, so it does nothing for the person the wearer is walking behind. And it requires that you are already looking at the person’s face at the moment it matters.Line of sight only

02 — Without the light

Frame thickness and a lens in the corner
Camera glasses need room for optics, a battery and a board, so the temples and the upper frame are noticeably chunkier than ordinary eyewear. A small lens in the upper corner of the frame front is the giveaway. This tells you the capability is present. It says nothing about whether it is in use.Capability, not activity
The shutter sound
Meta’s glasses emit a faint click, similar to a phone shutter, when a photo is taken. In a quiet room you may hear it. In a bar, a street or an airport you will not.Quiet rooms only
Behaviour
Capture generally requires a deliberate act — a tap on the temple, a press, or a spoken command to the assistant. Someone repeatedly touching the side of their glasses or talking to them is doing something. Weak on its own; useful alongside the rest.Circumstantial
What a Bluetooth scan can and cannot add
Smart glasses broadcast Bluetooth advertising packets so a phone can find them, and anything in range can read those packets. From them, an app can often recognise that a device of a given family is nearby, and roughly how strong the signal is. Recording state is not in that packet. A radio scan can put glasses in the room. Anything sold as detecting the recording itself
A phone cannot hear a recorder, cannot see a lens that is not reflecting light back at it, and has no access to the radio spectrum where such a claim would have to be settled. If a product tells you it knows a camera is rolling, it is telling you something it cannot know.Not possible
03 — Practical
What to actually do.
Look at the frame, then at the corner. Thick temples plus a lens in the upper frame front means the capability is there. That is the only part you can settle by looking.
Check the indicator when you can see their face. Steady or pulsing means video. A flash means a photo was taken. In bright light, get closer or accept that you cannot tell.
Ask. This is not a cop‑out. It is the only method with a high success rate, it is socially normal now, and most people say yes or no honestly.
Move if it matters. A camera you cannot see cannot be defeated by staring at it. Changing where the conversation happens is more effective than any detection method on this page.
Know the venue’s rules. Gyms, clinics, schools and many workplaces already prohibit recording. That is enforceable in a way that a detection app is not.
04 — The limits
What none of this can tell you.
Whether it is recording right now
Not unless you can see the indicator. There is no radio signal for “currently capturing,” so nothing that listens to the airwaves can answer this.
Whether a microphone is on
Audio capture has no visual indicator on most devices and no signal at all. A phone can hear a room; it cannot hear a recorder.
Whether glasses are present at all
Radio switched off, in a pocket, or out of range and they are invisible to a scan. A quiet sweep means nothing answered, not that nothing is there.
Whether an unfamiliar model is what you are looking at
Recognition depends on knowing the signature, and signatures lag hardware. A model released last week may read as an ordinary Bluetooth device.
Whether ordinary‑looking glasses are ordinary
Some camera frames are deliberately built not to look like camera frames. The physical tells in §02 only work on hardware that is not hiding.

05 — Disclosure
Where our app fits, and where it does not.
QuietField makes QuietCheck, an iPhone app that reads Bluetooth advertisements and tells you what it recognises nearby, with a stated confidence for each finding. On this subject it does exactly one useful thing: it can tell you that smart glasses appear to be in range when you had no way of knowing that. It narrows the question from “is there anything here” to “there is something here, and here is how sure we are.”
It does not tell you a recording is happening. It cannot, and neither can anything else on the App Store. We would rather say that here, on our own page, than have you find it out at the moment you were relying on it.
